Scientific Documentation of the COSMO model

COSMO-CLM is the climate mode of the COSMO model. The source codes of both modes are synchronized for each release of a main model version (e.g. 5.0) and are identical at that point in time.

The scientific documentation of the COSMO model is available on the COSMO webpage. All parts of the documentation for model version 5.00 (November 2013) and 5.05 (February 2018) are now holding a DOI and are stored permanently. The documentation includes the documentation of the COSMO model, the pre-processing program INT2LM and a User's Guide. It is updated regularly. However, it is never "up to date" since the documentation takes a lot of time. Recent developments are documented  in COSMO Technical Reports and in articles in the COSMO-Newsletters.

Documentation of the (independent) Components of the Model System

Components with direct coupling

Components coupled through the standard coupler OASIS

  • Community Land Model (SVAT with dynamical vegetation; alternative to TERRA)
  • Veg3D (SVAT; alternative to TERRA)
  • TRIMNP, NEMO, and ROMS (regional ocean models)
  • CICE (sea ice model)
  • ECHAM (global climate model; with OASIS a two-way nesting is possible)

Programming Standards of INT2LM and COSMO

The COSMO model is written in FORTRAN. The code development is based on the European standards for writing and documenting exchangeable FORTRAN 90 code. Further regulations are specified in the “COSMO standards for source code development” (Appendix F of the CLM-Community Agreemnet; see Terms & conditions for the latest version).
