CORDEX Mediterranean

Within the MED-CORDEX and HYMEX projects several institutes all over Europe are investigating regional climate simulation in the Mediterranean.

Model domain

For the Mediterranean, the simulations are performed on a rotated grid with the pole at 162°W longitude and 39.25°N latitude. The domain covers approximately the region from about 27°W to 58°E longitude and 21°N to 60°N latitude.

For MED-CORDEX the simulations were carried out mainly with a grid spacing of 0.44° (approx. 50 km) to enable a large ensemble. Several modeling groups perform simulations with about 10-km horizontal grid spacing. In addition, an ERA-Interim driven evaluation run with COSMO-CLM has also been performed with a grid spacing of 0.088° (approx. 9 km).

Runs at 0.44° (approx. 50 km)

Evaluation runs were performed at the Goethe University Frankfurt using ERA-Interim data as boundary forcing for the time period 1989 - 2008 using the same COSMO-CLM configuration as for EURO-CORDEX, and for 1979-2012 with the CORDEX-Africa configuration. The climate projections are carried out using the COSMO-CLM configuration that has also been used for the CORDEX-Africa simulations.
